About this chronology
Every row here comes from Luke Tyerman, The Life and Times of the Rev. John Wesley, M.A., Founder of the Methodists (3 vols, London, 1870–71). Each event carries the volume and page it was taken from, linked to the Project Gutenberg text, so any line can be checked against Tyerman himself.
The chronology was compiled from Tyerman's text alone: gaps were not filled from memory or from later biographers. Where Tyerman is vague, contradicts himself, or disagrees with a Journal entry or letter he quotes, his version is kept and the problem is flagged in a compiler's note (⚑).
Dates. Years are normalised to begin on 1 January. A date marked “c.” was computed from a vague phrase (“five weeks after”) or is known only to the year; the note gives the reasoning.
Places. Places are pinned to the town as Tyerman names it, with historic counties. A row naming several places is a tour, drawn as a line in the order Tyerman gives. Pins for small or renamed places are marked as probable identifications in the place panel. Regions (“Cornwall”, “Yorkshire”) are not pinned.
Coverage. Volumes I and II, 1703–1767. Volume III (1767–1791) is still to come.
